Lake Shkodra is the largest lake on the Balkan peninsular .The lake is situated on the border between Albania and Montenegro, Albania has about two thirds of its surface. The major tributaries are Moraca, Crnica, Plavnica and Rijeka Crnojevica while the Bojana river connects with the Adriatic making it accessible to small ships and boats.
There are about 842 species of algae, 50 species of fish living in the lake and about 270 species of birds found by the lake.
The lake is in a karst depression and the depth varies considerably(from 6 to 60 m., with an average of 44 m.) .
Even the total area changes depending on the seasonal cycle (the fact is not due as much from evaporation as from more or less significant sources of underground supplies
